I don't know about mass editing, but it is a HUGE pain on LJ, for me too. Extra paragraph breaks, no italics, etc. But yeah, you can post each chapter privately and then just make the masterpost public. And don't worry - I've totally made that mistake before. :) It takes some trial and error for me to figure out how to use new platforms.
